Perendale Breeding Aims

In 2007 we trialed some Perendale semen from New Zealand in our Maternal stud with outstanding results.  The Perendales have been used extensively in New Zealand for many years and are an extended cross of Cheviot and Romney from many years ago, in much the same way that the Coopworth is originally a cross of Border Leicester and Romney.

The Perendales are active and hardy, have a moderate frame score, have powerful maternal characteristics, and are very fertile with excellent carcase shape.  These traits are exactly the direction we want to go.  They are compact nuggetty sheep with black hooves and noses, extremely tough, and worm tolerant.  Their wool quality is very good and is a little finer and more dense than the traditional Coopworth types.

The Perendale infused progeny have also impressed our ram clients, selling extremely well at our annual ramsales.  These outstanding results prompted us to go to New Zealand in 2010 and select a team of Elite Perendale stud rams which we have brought to Australia.

We really believe that they have some very desirable traits that will benefit the Australian sheep industry. "Little wonder they are a major maternal breed in New Zealand and growing".
