Chrome Sheep Studs 17th Annual Spring Ram Sale attracted a strong crowd, with buyers attending on-property sale having to brave chilling wind and rain, while those bidding on-line through AuctionsPlus having more comfortable conditions.

Of the 439 rams offered, 390 sold and averaged $2,096, the second-highest overall average recorded by our stud.

The standout performers on the day were the Chromedales, which achieved a full clearance and averaged $2,733 - a record for our Maternal line. Top-priced rams were two Chromedale rams, Lots 28 & 29, for $4,100 selling to long-standing clients C,B,C & J Grant of Pigeon Ponds, Victoria.

In the terminal breeds, the top-priced ram was an ICON Poll Dorset (Lot 359), purchased by Stuart Bowd of Strathdownie for $2,100. ASBVs TCP 137, BWT 0.6, WWT 11.7, PWWT 15.9, PFAT -0.9, PEMD 1.8 Video

Volume buyers included Delta Ag with 23 rams (8 ICON Southie, 15 ICON 25s), Paraway with 22 ICON Southies, and Jakabul with 20 ICON Poll Dorsets.

The Chrome Sheep Stud's 14th annual Summer Ram Sale, held on January 6, marked an impressive milestone with the debut of its newest breed, the Chrome Shedders. This year’s sale, which offered both on-property and online bidding via Auctions Plus, achieved commendable results, highlighting the stud's reputation for delivering quality genetics.

Out of an increased offering of 315 rams, 269 were sold, with an overall average price of $1,132—a testament to the affordability and value, buyers continue to find at Chrome. However, the spotlight was firmly on the Chrome Shedders, which proved to be the day's standout attraction.
The breed's potential was showcased by two top-priced rams, purchased for $3,700 each by Wayne and Velia Munro of Nulkwyne, Branxholme, Victoria. With Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) for Lot 290 MCP+ 137, WWT 7.3, PWT 10.9, FAT 0, PEMD 1.8, and Lot 293 MCP+ 145, WWT 7.3, PWT 10.9, FAT -0.2, PEMD 2.2.

The first limited offering of Chrome Shedders achieved an average price of $1,676, with ram lambs commanding significant attention. Of the 23 of the 2024 Drop ram lambs offered, 20 sold at an average price of $1,895—a clear indication of strong demand for this promising new line.
The success of this inaugural offering cements the Chrome Shedders' place as a breed to watch, blending performance, affordability, and innovation. As Chrome Sheep Stud continues to raise the bar, buyers can look forward to future opportunities to invest in this exciting new breed.

The sale also showcased the established success of Chrome’s terminal sires. ICON Southies, ICON 25s, and ICON Poll Dorsets achieved a 95% clearance rate, with 142 of 149 rams sold at an average price of $1,000. The top-priced terminal rams, ICON 25s, Lots 203 and 204 from the ICON 25s line, were sold for $2,100 to long-term clients C, B, C & J Grant. With Lot 203 ASBVs TCP 144, WWT 10.4, PWT 16.1, FAT -0.3, PEMD 1.7, and Lot 204 TCP 151, WWT 11.8, PWT 17.1.1, FAT -0.7, PEMD 2.5

Key volume buyer was Wattlebank, Toolondo, securing 23 terminal rams, consisting of 12 ICON Southies, 4 ICON 25s, and 7 ICON Poll Dorsets.

Chrome Sheep Stud has once again demonstrated its ability to meet market demand while introducing exciting new options for buyers. With strong results across the board and a promising future for the Chrome Shedders, the stud continues to raise the bar in sheep breeding innovation.
